How it's calculated
Petrol cost = km per month ÷ mileage (km/L) × petrol price, plus servicing per km.
Electricity cost = km per month × Wh/km ÷ 1000 ÷ 90 % charging efficiency × your tariff, plus servicing per km (EVs have no engine oil, filters, clutch or spark plugs).
Payback = extra purchase price of the EV (after subsidy) ÷ monthly saving. The 5-year saving subtracts that extra price.
CO₂: petrol emits 2.31 kg CO₂ per litre burnt; India's grid averages about 0.72 kg CO₂ per kWh (CEA CO₂ baseline database). EV emissions fall further on rooftop solar.

Frequently asked questions
What is the running cost of an electric scooter per km in India?
About ₹0.20–0.35 per km on a home tariff (30 Wh/km at ₹7–9/kWh, plus charging losses), against ₹2–2.5 per km for a 45 km/L petrol scooter at ₹100/L.
Is an EV worth it if I drive only 20 km a day?
The running-cost saving is real but small at low mileage, so payback on a higher purchase price takes longer. Set your own km/day and EV premium above — for many 2W buyers with today's prices the premium is small or zero.
Does this include battery replacement?
No. Most EV batteries in India carry 3–8 year warranties; add a battery reserve per km to the EV service cost if you want to include it.
