How it's calculated

Investment = chargers × charger price + site cost (power connection/transformer, civil work, cabling, installation), less any subsidy.

Energy sold per month = chargers × charger kW × average full-power hours per day × 30. Utilisation is the biggest driver of profit: 2–4 hours a day (8–17 %) is typical for a new public DC site.

Energy cost = energy sold ÷ 94 % (charger losses) × your EV tariff, with fixed/demand charges spread per kWh or put in fixed costs. Gross margin = revenue − energy cost.

Monthly profit = gross margin − fixed costs (rent or revenue share, staff, charge-management software, maintenance, insurance). Payback = investment ÷ monthly profit. Break-even hours is the daily use at which profit is zero.

Results are engineering estimates for planning and learning. Check them against datasheets, supplier quotes and the applicable standards before you build or invest.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to open an EV charging station in India?

A single 30–60 kW DC charger costs roughly ₹6–20 lakh; add power connection, civil work and installation. A small AC-only site with a few 7.4 kW chargers can start under ₹5 lakh. Prices vary widely — enter real quotes above.

Is an EV charging station profitable?

It depends mostly on utilisation and your margin per kWh. With a ₹8–10/kWh margin, a 60 kW charger used 3 hours a day sells ~5,400 kWh a month — about ₹45,000–55,000 gross margin before fixed costs.

Do I need a licence to set up a public charging station?

No separate licence is needed — the Ministry of Power has classified EV charging as a service, not a sale of electricity. You need a power connection from your DISCOM (often on a special EV tariff) and must follow the Ministry of Power guidelines and CEA safety regulations.
